Mubende District (UGNEWSLINE) – A pregnant woman and her husband have been murdered in their home in Mubende District, western Uganda, in a suspected robbery, as police investigate a series of attacks on three villages that left other residents seriously injured.
The couple, identified as Sserwanja Ivan, 29, and his pregnant wife, Rose Nakalanzi, 26, were found dead at their home in Lukaya Village, Kitenga Sub-county, on Friday morning, 9 October 2026.
Police say the attackers struck during the early hours, when it was still dark, before fleeing with the couple’s motorcycle and two smartphones.
The bodies had multiple deep cut wounds to the head, and a blood-stained forked hoe was recovered at the scene.
“The deceased were coffee dealers, which raises suspicion that the motive of the attackers was economic,” said Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region police spokesperson, in a statement issued on Saturday, 10 October.
The bodies were taken to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital for post-mortem examinations after homicide detectives, led by the Mubende District Police Commander, visited the scene, documented evidence and recorded statements from witnesses.
Police dogs were also deployed, but heavy rain hampered their work.
The bodies were discovered at about 10am after a child from a neighbouring household, identified as Rose Birimuye, went to the couple’s home and received no response despite finding the door open.
She alerted another neighbour, Loyce Kyarisima, who entered the house and found the couple lying lifeless in a pool of blood.
The killings were among three reported attacks in Kitenga Sub-county on the same night.
In another incident in Lukaya Village, Bugonzi Parish, a 40-year-old woman, Sophia Nalukenge, was attacked inside her home at about 2am on Friday after waking up to use the toilet.
Police say an unidentified man dressed in black and armed with a blunt object struck her on the head.
She raised an alarm, waking her elder daughter, who also called for help from neighbours.
The attacker fled with three smartphones and one basic mobile phone, while the injured woman was taken to Royal Medical Clinic for treatment.
Investigators suspect the assailant may have entered the house unnoticed and hidden inside, or that the victim may not have secured the house properly.
Police say there were no signs of forced entry.
A third attack was reported in Kayanja Village, Nsengwe Parish, where unidentified assailants armed with a machete and a knife broke into the home of Onesmus Tumwebaze and his wife, Agatha Kukundakwe.
The couple were severely injured before the attackers fled with two mobile phones.
Police have not disclosed the exact time of the attack.
Mubende District Police Commander Umar Mugerwa visited the affected scenes and conducted community policing activities as investigators pursued leads.
Police say they are working with the Wamala Region Flying Squad Unit to identify and arrest the suspects behind the attacks. No arrests had been announced in the statement.
