KAMPALA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) – Traffic police have arrested 92 motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol in a single-night operation across five divisions of the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), raising fresh concerns about the dangers of drink-driving, particularly during weekends.
The operation, conducted on the night of October 24, targeted motorists in Kira Road, Kabalagala, Jinja Road, Kawempe and Katwe, according to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.
Kira Road recorded 15 arrests, while Kabalagala had 16 suspects apprehended. Jinja Road registered the highest number, with 20 arrests, followed by Kawempe with 18 and Katwe with 23.
Michael Kananura, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb drink-driving, particularly on weekends when increased social activities often involve alcohol consumption.
The arrest of 92 suspects in one night across the five operational areas highlights the scale of the challenge facing traffic police as authorities seek to reduce road crashes and prevent avoidable deaths.
Kananura warned motorists against driving after consuming alcohol, emphasising the need for responsible behaviour on the roads.
The Directorate noted that road crash statistics indicate that weekends account for more road crash fatalities than other days of the week, reinforcing concerns about the risks associated with drink-driving.
Traffic police continue to conduct targeted operations, particularly on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays, to identify and apprehend motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Motorists have been urged to arrange alternative transport if they intend to drink, with authorities stressing that taking responsibility on the road is essential to protecting lives.
“If you drink, do not drive. If you drive, do not drink,” the Directorate cautioned.
