KATAKWI: As the country gears up for the 2025/2026 general elections, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has today embarked on a nationwide electoral process at the village level.

The party elected various leadership structures, including women, youth, disabled, elderly, entrepreneurship, mainstream party leader, workers, and LC1 NRM party flag bearers.

Among the party bigwigs, who actively participated in the most peaceful exercise as described by Hon. Fred Omach, the party’s national Vice Chairperson, is Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Rose Alupo Epel.

Alupo contested for the position of chairperson Veterans of Oigo Imumwa village in Ongongojja Sub-County, Usuk County, Katakwi district in Eastern Uganda.

She trounced former Arrow-boy Charles Alungo with 307 votes against 07 according to Moses Otim, the NRM party election official. The free and fair election was witnessed by Hon. Fred Omach.

Shortly after she was declared winner, the vice president commended her competitor Alungo for taking courage to contest against the person of the vice president.

Alupo, an incumbent, thanked the people of Oigo Imumwa village for lining up behind her and electing her Chairperson Veterans.

Using the same platform, Alupo, who doubles as the district woman Member of Parliament rallied the people of Katakwi to embrace government programs aimed at poverty alleviation, such as the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and Youth livelihoods among others.

She reiterated the government commitment to infrastructure development, including the construction of Achinga bridge, which connects Oigo Imumwa village to Kapelebyong district, facilitating transportation of goods and services to different markets.

She however cautioned those contesting for political positions to stop commercializing politics saying it hinders people from voting the rightful leaders and promotes chaos.

Hon. Omach hailed the people of Oigo Imumwa village for ensuring a peaceful electoral exercise adding that out of the 72,000 villages countrywide, Oigo Imumwa exhibited great discipline, allowing people to participate in electing their leaders of choice.

He asked those elected to mobilise support for the president and noted that 31 people were elected per village in the NRM party structures
