A 47-year-old driver has been remanded to Luzira Upper Prison after being charged with the murder of veteran Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu.
Vincent Arnold Nsamba, also known as Sitenda, appeared before Makindye Chief Magistrates Court, where Magistrate Aidah Nanjala read him the murder charge.
Prosecutors allege that on 24 September 2026, at Market B Zone in Kibuli Parish, Makindye Division, Kampala District, Mr Nsamba caused the death of 77-year-old Matovu with malice aforethought.
The court did not allow Nsamba to respond to the charge because murder is a capital offence that can only be tried by the High Court.
State Attorney Jamaima told the court that investigations into the case were still under way.
Magistrate Nanjala remanded Nsamba to Luzira Upper Prison and informed him that he could apply for bail before the High Court. He is due to return to court on 3 November, when he is expected to be updated on the progress of the investigations.
Nsamba was brought to court alongside Rose Tumusiime, who police say is linked to the circumstances surrounding Mr Matovu’s death.
Tumusiime was later taken away by security personnel without being charged.
Matovu died at Kibuli Hospital on 24 September after suffering a severe head injury during an early-morning confrontation in Kibuli.
Police said their preliminary investigations indicated that Matovu had visited a woman at about 05:30 local time and that a physical confrontation allegedly followed as the pair left the area.
A boda-boda rider reportedly took the injured musician to Kibuli Hospital, where he later died.
Police subsequently opened a murder investigation and arrested Nsamba in Nansana, Wakiso District. He was initially identified as a private security guard.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against Nsamba have not been tested in court.
