A bus driver was killed and 15 people were injured after a school bus carrying students on an educational trip crashed into a stationary trailer in eastern Uganda early Tuesday, police said.
The crash occurred at about 4:45am on July 14 in Nawangisa village along the Mbale–Iganga Highway in Bugweri District.
According to preliminary investigations, an Isuzu bus, registration number UA551ED, owned by Amuria High School, was transporting 73 students from St. Paul Secondary School in Katakwi to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography field trip when it collided with the rear of a stationary Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number UBB269V.
“The bus, owned by Amuria High School, was transporting students from St. Paul Secondary School in Katakwi,” the Busoga Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha said.
Police identified the deceased as Abdallah Kasakya, 68, the driver of the bus, who died at the scene.
The injured were identified as Iraat Joseph, Obweikal Emmanuel, Opio Samuel Martin, Ingirot John Martin, Emodit Simon, Aanyu Samuel, Oumo Jeremiah, Okurut Silver, Alibet Isaac, Oila Samuel, Okot Timothy, Ocen John Mark, Nyasurura Perez, teacher Oluga George, and the bus conductor, whose identity had not yet been established.
The injured were taken to Iganga General Hospital for treatment, while Kasakya’s body was transferred to the Iganga Hospital mortuary.
Traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer examined the scene, and both vehicles were taken to Busembatya Police Station pending mechanical inspection as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
Police urged motorists to exercise caution while using the roads to help prevent similar accidents.
