The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to all presidential candidates and their campaign teams after a violent road crash involving National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi’s convoy left several people seriously injured along the Nakifuma–Kayunga Road.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 AM in Namyoya Village as Kyagulanyi’s convoy was en route from Kalagi to Kayunga.
According to eyewitnesses, the chaos began when an unidentified motorcycle, reportedly moving at high speed, collided with another vehicle, sparking a chain-reaction crash involving several motorcycles and a campaign vehicle.
At the heart of the crash was a white Mitsubishi Rosa minibus (UAZ 064H), adorned with Kyagulanyi’s campaign posters, which plowed into a group of motorcycles, unable to brake in time, causing further carnage.
Police confirmed that multiple victims, mostly motorcycle riders and passengers, were injured and rushed to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital, while some were referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized care.
Identified victims include: Bashir Kewanza (27) – passenger sustained multiple injuries including a maxillary fracture; Bashir Kakaire Bashir (35) – multiple injuries and wounds; Musa Ssepereza (40) – referred to Mulago with multiple fractures and wounds; Michael Kisomba (28) – motorcycle rider from Nansana, suffered a leg fracture and chest trauma; Eric Ssewaya Eric (23) – multiple injuries, hospitalized at Naggalama; and Robert Mutagubya Robert (24) – also referred to Mulago with serious injuries
Among the vehicles involved were: UAZ 064H – Mitsubishi Rosa (white, campaign vehicle); and UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T, UFQ 250Q – All Bajaj Boxer motorcycles (red).
An additional unregistered motorcycles removed from the scene before police arrived.
Police have since towed three motorcycles and one campaign vehicle to Naggalama Police Yard for forensic inspection.
Preliminary investigations point to reckless riding and driving as the primary cause of the crash.
However, authorities are also investigating reports that campaign posters and boards displaying Kyagulanyi’s image had been placed in the middle of the road, potentially obstructing traffic and triggering the accident.
Witnesses also blame high-speed movement and lack of coordination within the convoy for escalating the severity of the crash.
Police – “This Behavior Will Not Be Tolerated”
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango condemned the conduct of some campaign convoys and called for strict observance of traffic regulations, especially during politically charged events.
“Early findings suggest reckless behavior. We urge all motorists, particularly those involved in political convoys, to prioritize road safety. No one is above the law,” Onyango stated.
For emphasis, police Spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma issued a strong nationwide warning to all political actors.
“We issue a strong warning to all political actors and their entourages to strictly observe traffic laws. Irresponsible use of the roads, as demonstrated in this incident, will not be tolerated. The Police will enforce strict measures to prevent such conduct. Political euphoria must never override public safety.”
With the election season heating up, the Uganda Police Force is now on high alert, vowing to intensify enforcement along major campaign routes.
Political parties have been urged to coordinate with traffic police in advance and ensure that all convoys move in a manner that does not endanger lives.
Kituuma said authorities are continuing their investigations, and more updates will follow as the story develops.
