Few would have predicted that a first-time tournament would command such attention. Yet by the time the final putts dropped at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, the inaugural Serena Captain’s Putter had done exactly that, attracting close to 120 golfers and delivering a memorable debut that blended competitive golf, business networking and community impact.
The tournament, championed by Jimmy D. Mugerwa, Board Chairman of dfcu Limited and Captain of Serena Golf Club, was conceived with an ambition that stretched far beyond a single day on the course. His vision was to establish an event that celebrates the spirit of golf while bringing together the leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals shaping Uganda’s future. From the strong turnout to the enthusiasm from players and partners alike, the inaugural edition suggested that vision may already be taking root.
Against the backdrop of Serena’s recently upgraded course, players competed across multiple categories, while conversations flowed between fairways, tee boxes and the clubhouse. It was a reminder of why golf continues to occupy a unique place in business and society: it combines competition with connection, creating opportunities for relationships to develop long after the final score has been recorded.
For dfcu Bank, the Captain’s Putter reflects the philosophy behind dfcu Xclusive Banking, which recognises that meaningful relationships are built not only in boardrooms and offices, but also through shared experiences and trusted networks. The proposition is designed for affluent and high-net-worth customers seeking personalised financial solutions, exclusive experiences and access to communities that support their personal and professional ambitions.
Speaking after the tournament, Annet Kiconco, Chief Retail Banking Officer at dfcu Bank, said the overwhelming response demonstrated the enduring appeal of golf as a platform for bringing people together.
“The first edition has been very successful. We had close to 120 players on the course, which was more than we expected. Golf brings together golfers from across the country to enjoy the game, but beyond that, it creates opportunities to connect, build relationships and create lasting partnerships.”
“Beyond the competition, the Captain’s Putter brings together business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals who are helping shape Uganda’s economy. It creates space for meaningful conversations, shared ambitions and new possibilities for growth.”
Perhaps the tournament’s most distinctive feature was what happened away from the scorecards. Through an innovative hole-sponsorship model championed by Mugerwa and supported by members and corporate partners, the event generated resources that will now be reinvested in the sport. Proceeds will support junior and professional golf development, while a club-wide equipment drive will provide golf clubs, shoes and accessories to caddies, helping extend opportunity within the game.
That outcome, Kiconco said, represents the true success of the inaugural edition.
“What excites us most is that the impact of this tournament will continue long after today. The support for junior golfers, professionals and caddies shows what can be achieved when organisations, partners and individuals come together behind a common purpose.”
On the course, Allan Atuhairwe stole the show in the guest category with an impressive 39 points to claim top honours, while strong performances across the men’s, ladies’ and seniors’ divisions ensured plenty of drama throughout the day.
Backed by dfcu Bank and Uganda Breweries Limited, the Serena Captain’s Putter now appears set for a future far beyond its successful debut. If the inaugural edition was any indication, Mugerwa’s vision has already found its audience and Uganda’s golf calendar may have discovered its newest tradition.
