Rwenzori East Region – Kasese: Jubilant celebrations erupted across Bukonzo West Constituency last evening as veteran politician and academic, Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, was declared the winner of the NRM Primary Elections, securing a commanding lead over his opponent.
In what is already being described as a historic landslide, Dr. Kiyonga garnered 19,965 votes, representing 62.2% of the total vote, outshining Hon. Kabyanga Godfrey Kime, the current State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, who received 10,218 votes (33.3%).
Key areas that overwhelmingly backed Dr. Kiyonga include Bwera Sub-county, Mpondwe Town Council, Ihandiro Sub-county, and Karambi Sub-county, among others. His wide-reaching support reflects months of relentless grassroots mobilization and community engagement across the constituency.
Dr. Kiyonga, who also serves as the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, is widely respected for his longstanding public service and commitment to education, health, and development. His campaign was marked by a return to foundational party values, promising to restore unity, transparency, and development-focused leadership to Bukonzo West.
“This victory is not mine alone—it is a victory for the people of Bukonzo West. Together, we are reclaiming our future,” Dr. Kiyonga said in his victory speech.
The election, which had drawn significant public and political attention, was closely monitored by Uganda Police Force and sister security agencies, ensuring a peaceful and orderly voting process throughout the day.
Political analysts say Dr. Kiyonga’s triumph repositions him as a central figure in the region’s political landscape and sets the stage for a high-stakes general election later this year.
