HOIMA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) – Government will advance UGX 175 billion to Abubaker Technical Services to accelerate the completion of the Hoima–Busunju Road, a key infrastructure project supporting Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This was announced by the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, during an inspection of the ongoing works on the 145-kilometre road project, valued at UGX 309 billion. The road is strategically important for strengthening connectivity to Uganda’s oil-producing region and facilitating the movement of football teams, officials, visitors and goods during AFCON 2027.
Works are approximately 40 per cent complete, with completion targeted for February 2027. The Government advance of UGX 175 billion is intended to address cash-flow challenges and accelerate construction to ensure the road is ready ahead of the continental tournament.
Of the UGX 175 billion, UGX 65 billion will be allocated to the construction of Kafu Bridge across River Kafu to address flooding challenges and improve transport reliability along the route.
During the inspection, Hon. Byamukama emphasized the need for the contractor to meet contractual obligations and accelerate implementation to ensure timely delivery of the project. The completed road is expected to improve regional connectivity, facilitate trade and strengthen access to the oil-producing region beyond AFCON 2027.
The Minister also engaged local leaders and residents affected by the Kinogozi–Buhimba Road and Mparo Bypass projects on land acquisition and Project-Affected Persons (PAPs) issues. He clarified that developments within established road reserves will not attract compensation, while eligible PAPs will be compensated in accordance with applicable procedures.
The Ministry of Works and Transport continues to engage contractors, local leaders and affected communities to resolve outstanding challenges and facilitate the timely delivery of critical road infrastructure ahead of AFCON 2027.
