The Ministry of Local Government (MoLG) convened a crucial consultative meeting today at its headquarters to discuss the proposed creation of three new districts and the elevation of Tororo Municipality to city status. The proposals aim to address deep-rooted socio-political tensions within Tororo District.
The meeting, chaired by Hon. Raphael Magyezi, Minister for Local Government, brought together Members of Parliament representing Tororo, the District Chairperson, District Speaker, Resident District Commissioner, and LCIII chairpersons from sub-counties and town councils.
The initiative, directed by H.E. the President and Cabinet, proposes the establishment of Mukuju, Mulanda, and Kisoko districts, alongside the transformation of Tororo Municipality into Tororo City. This restructuring is seen as a strategic step to ease longstanding conflicts between the Iteso and Japadhola communities that have adversely affected governance and public service delivery.
Minister Magyezi noted that consensus has been reached among political and cultural leaders supporting the division, anticipating that the new administrative units will promote peace and spur sustainable development. “Tororo City will remain a symbol of unity, retaining the name that both communities cherish,” he emphasized.
Before finalizing the decision, Minister Magyezi urged local leaders to engage their communities actively. He announced a follow-up consultative meeting scheduled for this Friday in Tororo, encouraging grassroots leaders to involve LC1 and LC2 chairpersons, as well as councilors from all 11 sub-counties.
“Leadership is about listening to the people,” Magyezi said. “You are increasingly respected as leaders, so let us ensure the voices of the communities shape this critical decision.”
The proposed changes mark a significant move by the government to strengthen local governance and foster social cohesion in one of Uganda’s most diverse districts.
