MASAKA, September 5, 2026 — Farmers in Masaka City are counting heavy losses following nearly four months of persistent sunshine and drought that have left coffee, matooke and other food crops severely affected.

During a visit to farmers in Kanabukulilo Village, Bisanje Ward, Kimanya-Kabonera Division in Masaka City, State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere Nsubuga expressed concern over the impact of the prolonged dry spell on farmers and their livelihoods.

The farmers also raised concerns over the increasing presence of fake fertilisers on the market, saying they have lost money after purchasing products that failed to produce the expected results.

Minister Nameere criticised agricultural extension workers and production officers for what she described as inadequate guidance to farmers on how to prepare for and respond to prolonged dry spells.

She said some of the losses could have been reduced if the responsible officers had effectively carried out their duties and provided farmers with timely advice.

The Minister revealed that the government has recently signed a new irrigation project, with Masaka City among the beneficiaries. The project is expected to strengthen farmers’ resilience and support agricultural production during prolonged dry spells.

Nameere also pledged to engage the Office of the Prime Minister to explore possible support for farmers affected by the drought.

She further called for action against dealers supplying fake agricultural inputs as the government seeks both immediate and long-term solutions to the challenges facing farmers.

The Minister was accompanied by the Masaka Resident City Commissioner, Washaki Ahmed.
