What began as an idea many financial institutions considered too ambitious has today evolved into one of Uganda’s most innovative agro-processing businesses, thanks in large part to support from the European Union.
Pristine Foods Ltd has grown into a key player within Uganda’s poultry value chain, specializing in liquid eggs, egg powder, mayonnaise, and other egg-based products. The company now supports nutrition initiatives for vulnerable children across Uganda while creating sustainable market opportunities for local poultry farmers.
According to Managing Director Joel Guma, access to financing was one of the company’s greatest hurdles during its early years.
From an Unconventional Idea to a Growing Ugandan Enterprise
“When we started, one of the biggest challenges, like any business, was access to finance,” Guma explained. “Many financial institutions considered us too risky because we were a startup.”
At the time, industrial egg processing was still relatively unfamiliar within Uganda’s agribusiness landscape, and many investors struggled to understand the long-term potential of the business model.
“We were pursuing something many people believed could not work,” Guma said. “Very few people believed Uganda could sustain a large-scale egg processing business.”
The turning point came when the European Union recognized the company’s potential to strengthen Uganda’s agricultural value chains, support poultry farmers, and contribute to food security and local manufacturing.
The company’s fundraising efforts began in 2015, with meaningful investment support materializing in 2018. This support enabled Pristine Foods Ltd to establish critical infrastructure for its liquid egg processing operations.
The financing facilitated the acquisition of key processing equipment, including pasteurizers, cold rooms, ovens, egg breakers, centrifuges, and delivery trucks. Production officially commenced in 2019.
“The European Union believed in us when very few others did,” Guma said. “That support helped us transform an idea into a functioning business.”
Driving Agro-Processing Growth in Uganda
Since launching operations, Pristine Foods Ltd has recorded significant growth.
“When we started, we sold only about 100 kilograms in the first month,” Guma recalled. “Today, we process and sell close to 17 tons of liquid eggs every week.”
The company has steadily expanded beyond liquid eggs into mayonnaise, egg powder, and other value-added products, positioning itself among Uganda’s leading agro-processing enterprises.
Beyond financial support, the European Union also contributed to strengthening the company’s operational and institutional capacity. This included support for production systems, quality assurance, product development, corporate governance, and certification processes.
According to Guma, this support helped the company establish professional systems capable of sustaining long-term growth and competitiveness.
Supporting Uganda’s Poultry Farmers
Pristine Foods Ltd has become an important market for poultry farmers across Uganda.
The company has profiled more than 2,000 farmers and trained approximately 1,000 poultry farmers in poultry production, animal nutrition, climate-smart agriculture, gender inclusion, and agribusiness management.
Currently, the company works with between 100 and 150 active suppliers depending on market conditions.
“We have seen farmers grow tremendously over time,” Guma noted. “Some farmers who started by supplying 50 trays of eggs are now supplying over 200 trays regularly.”
Others have expanded from managing a few hundred birds to operating larger poultry farms, improving household incomes and strengthening livelihoods.
Because of its strict quality standards, the company purchases eggs at premium rates, helping farmers improve earnings while encouraging higher production standards within Uganda’s poultry sector.
Expanding Capacity During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic created major disruptions for Uganda’s poultry sector, with farmers struggling to secure stable markets for excess egg production.
At the time, Pristine Foods Ltd lacked sufficient processing capacity to absorb the surplus.
Additional support financed by the European Union enabled expansion of the company’s factory infrastructure between 2022 and 2024. This included the acquisition of larger processing equipment, expanded spray drying capacity, and larger egg breakers, allowing the company to scale production significantly.
“That expansion allowed us to support more farmers and process larger volumes,” Guma explained.
The investment strengthened Uganda’s agro-processing capacity while helping stabilize parts of the poultry value chain during a difficult economic period.
Supporting Child Nutrition Across Uganda
One of the company’s most impactful innovations is its egg powder product used in nutrition initiatives supporting vulnerable children across Uganda.
The egg powder is packaged into sachets and mixed into foods such as porridge and beans to improve nutritional intake among children between six and 23 months.
The initiative is currently supporting communities in districts including Kamwenge, Kyegegwa, Kikube, and Kiryandongo.
According to Guma, the product has the potential to improve nutrition outcomes for vulnerable children while creating sustainable demand for locally produced eggs.
Strengthening Local Manufacturing
Pristine Foods Ltd has also expanded into mayonnaise production as part of broader efforts to strengthen local manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported food products.
The company’s mayonnaise products are made using locally sourced eggs and sunflower oil, supporting poultry farmers and agricultural producers across Uganda.
Today, Pristine Foods distributes its mayonnaise products through approximately 240 retail outlets, including supermarkets and shops in Kampala and other regions.
The company is also developing additional product varieties, including garlic, chili, pepper, tartar sauce, and thousand island mayonnaise options.
“We realized Uganda has the capacity to produce these products locally,” Guma said. “We wanted to create value using local agricultural resources.”
Creating Jobs and Supporting Communities
Pristine Foods Ltd currently employs nearly 60 people directly, many of whom come from surrounding communities.
The company has also contributed to growth in related industries, particularly bakeries that use liquid eggs in production.
According to Guma, bakeries using liquid eggs have improved efficiency and increased production output without increasing ingredient costs.
“There are businesses across Uganda that now depend on our products for daily operations,” he explained.
The company has also established an in-house product development unit focused on creating new egg-based products tailored for Ugandan consumers and local markets.
Building Uganda’s Agro-Processing Future
As demand for locally processed food products continues to grow, Pristine Foods Ltd is positioning itself as a leading player in Uganda’s agro-processing sector.
Its growth demonstrates how strategic support from the European Union can help Ugandan businesses scale innovation, strengthen agricultural value chains, create employment opportunities, and support food security.
For Guma, the journey reflects the importance of long-term investment in local enterprise.
“The support helped us build a business that is creating impact across the value chain,” he said. “From farmers to manufacturers to consumers, the benefits continue to grow.”
