A remarkable story of loyalty and survival has captured hearts online after seven dogs in Jilin, China, escaped from a thief and journeyed roughly 17 kilometers back to their village together.
The dogs, stolen from three different households, had been loaded onto a transport truck and were reportedly headed for slaughter at a dog meat shop. The group included a German shepherd, a golden retriever, a corgi, and several other breeds.
Their escape happened on Monday (16 March) along the Changshuang Expressway, when the dogs managed to break free from the moving vehicle. Instead of scattering in fear, they stayed united, forming a tight-knit pack.
Over the next two days, the dogs travelled through unfamiliar terrain and busy roads without splitting up. Witnesses and drone footage showed an extraordinary level of coordination: larger, stronger dogs surrounded and protected an injured German shepherd that struggled to walk, while smaller dogs like the corgi remained safely within the group.
Their journey drew widespread attention online, with animal rescue volunteers and concerned netizens tracking their movements through social media. These efforts helped ensure the dogs stayed on course and out of danger.
By Wednesday (18 March), all seven dogs had successfully made it back home, suffering only minor injuries. Their relieved owners, who had feared the worst, were overjoyed by their safe return.
One owner noted that the dogs were familiar with one another, often playing together as neighbors something that likely helped them stick together and survive the long journey
