Intensified Uganda–DRC Offensive Pressures ADF Amid Rising Civilian Tol
Despite a renewed and increasingly coordinated military campaign by Ugandan and Congolese forces, attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on civilians have surged in recent months across parts of Ituri and neighbouring North Kivu province.
Earlier this month, at least 43 people were allegedly killed in one of the deadliest assaults reported.
The rescue of captives announced on Monday formed part of a broader offensive targeting ADF positions along the River Epulu.
According to the Ugandan military, the operation resulted in the deaths of several ADF fighters and the recovery of multiple weapons.
Authorities say joint operations between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo intensified since the beginning of the year.
In February, the joint forces reportedly overran a major ADF stronghold, marking a significant tactical gain.
Military officials argue that the sustained offensive is beginning to yield results. Improved security in parts of eastern DRC has allowed some displaced communities to return home, facilitated the reopening of schools, and supported the gradual resumption of cross-border trade between Uganda and the DRC.
