Police in Mukono are investigating a suspected murder by arson after an 11-month-old girl died in a house fire in Lufunve Village, Kyetume Parish, Nakisunga Sub-county.
The incident happened at about 7:40pm on Monday, September 7, 2026, when Merika Namugambe, 24, allegedly locked herself inside the house with her young daughter before allegedly setting it on fire.
Namugambe escaped from the burning house but sustained injuries.
“Police homicide officers visited and documented the scene, while the suspect was traced and arrested to assist with investigations,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
The child died in the fire, and her body was recovered from the scene before being taken to Mulago Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Preliminary police inquiries indicate that the incident may have followed domestic disagreements between Namugambe and her partner, with the two reportedly having separated.
Police say investigations are still under way to establish the circumstances that led to the fire and the child’s death. Namugambe is expected to be taken to court once inquiries are complete.
