Kampala, Uganda — A cloud of confusion and conflicting accounts has surrounded the death of a young bank customer, Fahad Lubega, following a disputed transaction and allegations that briefly linked his case to a mob justice incident in the Ntinda area.

Authorities and the bank involved are now offering competing versions of events as public pressure mounts for clarity.
Initial reports circulating on social media earlier this week claimed that Lubega had visited a bank branch in Ntinda to withdraw money when he was allegedly confronted by a bank official over a suspected past fraud-related matter.

The claims suggested that the confrontation escalated outside the banking hall, where members of the public and boda boda riders reportedly mistook the situation for a robbery attempt.

In the confusion that followed, a crowd is said to have attacked the man before some bystanders intervened and returned him to the bank premises, already seriously injured.

According to these early accounts, he later died before receiving adequate medical attention. These claims, however, have not been independently verified.
Uganda Police has since dismissed the social media narrative, stating that no case of mob action at a bank branch in Ntinda had been reported or recorded at Kira Road Police Station.

The police urged the public to rely on official channels and provide credible information where necessary, noting that unverified claims were circulating widely online.
Amid the controversy, the bank issued a statement confirming that Lubega had been involved in a disputed transaction days earlier at its Naalya Branch.

The bank said the matter had been reported to police, after which Lubega was taken into custody for further investigation.

The bank further extended condolences to his family and friends but declined to go into detail, stating that it was cooperating fully with investigators.
The bank’s disclosure has added a new layer to the case, shifting attention away from the alleged mob justice narrative toward questions about what happened after Lubega came into contact with law enforcement.

Neither the bank nor the police have clarified the nature of the dispute, the duration of his custody, or the circumstances leading to his death on June 10.
With key details still unclear and competing accounts in circulation, the case has ignited renewed public concern over accountability, transparency, and the handling of suspect-related deaths. Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing.
