KAMPALA,Uganda– The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has reaffirmed that its primary elections will take place as scheduled on Thursday, July 17, across all 72,000 villages in Uganda.
Addressing the media at a press conference today, Commission Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi dismissed speculation that the elections had been postponed.
“There have been several rumours suggesting a postponement, but I want to clarify that elections for parliamentary flag bearers will proceed on Thursday, the 17th. All candidates should prepare in accordance with the electoral guidelines,” said Dr. Odoi.
He outlined the polling day procedures, noting that voters are expected to arrive at the polling venues by 10:00 AM, when names will be read out to confirm attendance. Voting will then take place between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, using the lining-up method behind candidates’ posters or their designated agents.
NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong emphasized that only individuals whose names appear in the official village registers will be allowed to vote.
“If you’re a candidate, do not assume the register won’t be available. All villages will have their registers by Thursday morning, and only registered members will be permitted to vote,” he stated.
Todwong also confirmed that the party’s registers are currently being delivered to districts, and will subsequently be distributed to sub-counties and villages ahead of the elections.
He warned candidates against promoting sectarianism or using financial inducements to influence voters.
“We have received disturbing reports of some members exploiting religious and tribal sentiments and using large sums of money to sway voters. This must stop. Our members are expected to act respectfully and uphold the values of the party,” Todwong said.
