KAMPALA– The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has announced a partnership with MTN Uganda and Housing Finance Bank for the 6th edition of the NSSF Kampala Hills Run.

This charity run is an initiative aimed at raising funds to improve learning conditions in public primary schools through refurbishment, improved sanitation, and the promotion of digital literacy.

Scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the Kololo Independence Grounds, the run will cover 21km and 10km routes across selected hills of Kampala City.

Speaking at a media briefing held at Workers House in Kampala today, NSSF Managing Director Patrick Ayota said the initiative is part of the Fund’s corporate social investment strategy, which includes improving access to quality education.

NSSF Managing Director Patrick Ayota

“Over the years, we have been intentional about transitioning from simply being a good corporate citizen to embedding sustainability into our business strategy. Access to quality education is a key initiative in delivering this agenda,” he said.

“Together with our partners and individual participants, we aim to raise UGX 1.5 billion this year. Proceeds will go toward supporting 10 public primary schools across the country with renovations, sanitation improvements, and digital literacy enhancement,” Ayota added.

As the official partner, MTN Uganda has contributed UGX 200 million toward organizing the run, while Housing Finance Bank has contributed UGX 100 million. Next Media is the official broadcast partner through its sports channel NBS Sport, with Nation Media Group Uganda and Vision Group also joining as media partners.

Other key partners include the Uganda Athletics Federation (technical partner), Crown Beverages Limited (hydration partner via its Aquafina brand), and the Uganda Red Cross Society (First Aid partner).

Sylvia Mulinge, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer

During the cheque handover, Sylvia Mulinge, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, said:

“At MTN Uganda, we believe running is more than sport – it’s a catalyst for community transformation and personal growth. Through partnerships like the NSSF Kampala Hills Run, we’re investing in education, uplifting communities, and building the next generation of athletes.”

Michael Mugabi, Managing Director of Housing Finance Bank, emphasized the institution’s long-standing commitment to community upliftment:

Michael Mugabi, Managing Director of Housing Finance Bank

“We believe progress is only meaningful when our people have the opportunity to live, learn, and thrive. Our contribution of UGX 100 million is an investment in the potential of over 1,000 young learners. Every shilling is dedicated to creating classrooms that inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and improve learning environments for over 10,000 children across the country.”

Andrew Kabuura, Head of Sports Broadcast at NBS Sport, noted:

“The NSSF Kampala Hills Run is more than an annual event – it’s a movement. Year after year, we’ve seen it transform not only classrooms but entire futures. As storytellers, we’ve witnessed children learning in safer, better-equipped schools and communities united around a common cause.”

Ayota highlighted the long-term impact of the initiative, noting that over the past five years, the run has improved learning conditions and positively influenced school enrolment:

“Proceeds from previous editions have supported the renovation of 25 primary schools across the country, benefiting over 40,000 students daily. These interventions have led to a 12% increase in enrolment and a 10% reduction in dropouts at beneficiary schools.”

Additional partners for the run include Centenary Bank, Galaxy FM, Capital FM, Clarkson Insurance Brokers Limited, Standard Chartered Bank, SMS Construction Limited, Victoria Hospital, Insurance Regulatory Authority, Uganda Clays Limited, among others.
