The Uganda Police Force has intensified efforts to rid Kampala of criminal elements by launching the second phase of its intelligence-led operation, codenamed “Fukuza Kawenja.” The operation, conducted on the night of September 3, 2025, targeted known crime hotspots within the Central Business District (CBD).
According to Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the operation commenced around 11:00 PM and led to the arrest of 110 suspects, who were apprehended for allegedly engaging in crimes such as theft, assault, and other offences targeting unsuspecting members of the public. The suspects are currently detained at Central Police Station, Kampala, and are awaiting appearance in court.
“The goal of this operation is to identify, apprehend, and prosecute repeat offenders and gangs who terrorize city residents,” Onyango stated, adding that Fukuza Kawenja will continue as an ongoing initiative to improve public safety within the city center.
In a related effort, Kawempe Police Division carried out its own intelligence-led operation earlier that day, between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM, in the areas of Mpererwe, Kanyanya, Ttula, and Kidokolo. The operation focused on addressing growing public complaints about bag and phone snatchers, street robbers, and drug peddlers.
A total of 32 suspects were arrested and are currently held at Kawempe Police Station pending screening and further investigations. During the raid, law enforcement recovered quantities of marijuana and other narcotic substances from several individuals.
Police have described the operations as successful and reaffirmed their commitment to carrying out regular intelligence-driven enforcement actions to combat urban crime and enhance public safety.
“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activity. Together, we can create a safer city for all,” Onyango added.
