Police in Kigezi Region have confirmed two reported cases of alleged kidnapping involving learners, amid reports circulating on social media about continued abductions of children in the region.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime said one incident was reported in Kigongi Ward, Central Division, in Kabale Municipality, where the victim was later recovered.
Police are also investigating another alleged kidnapping reported in Bubaare Town Council, with efforts underway to trace the suspected perpetrators.
Tumushime said police have intensified intelligence-led operations and increased patrols around schools, boarding facilities and major routes commonly used by learners. He added that police are working with school authorities, local leaders and other security agencies to verify reports and strengthen the safety of children.
Police have urged parents to ensure that children travel in groups and report suspicious people around schools. School administrators have also been asked to strengthen access controls and promptly report strangers found on school premises. Boda boda riders and members of the public have been encouraged to provide credible information to police.
Tumushime also warned against spreading false information about alleged kidnappings, saying individuals found responsible for creating false alarms will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
Police reassured parents, school administrators and learners that the safety and security of children remain a top priority.
