Police in Kampala have launched investigations into a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of Ugandan musician David Sifaayo, popularly known as “Master Parrot,” along the Northern Bypass in Masanafu.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of June 1, 2026, at about 7:30pm, according to preliminary police findings.
Authorities say the musician was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by a speeding vehicle whose driver failed to stop and fled the scene.
Officers from Nateete Division Police responded to the incident and examined the scene as part of ongoing investigations.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was later conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination. Personal belongings recovered from the crash site have been secured by police as evidence.
The hit-and-run adds to Uganda’s growing road safety concerns, with traffic crashes continuing to claim thousands of lives annually.
According to the 2025 Annual Crime Report, road crashes killed 5,383 people across the country, an increase from 5,144 deaths recorded in 2024. The report indicates that an average of 15 people lose their lives on Ugandan roads every day, while more than 18,000 others sustained serious injuries.
Police attribute the majority of fatal crashes to speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, driver negligence, and failure to observe traffic regulations. Pedestrians remain among the most vulnerable road users, accounting for a significant proportion of road fatalities.
Investigators are now working to identify and trace the vehicle involved in the crash that claimed Master Parrot’s life. Police have appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or possess information that could aid investigations to come forward.
