Police in Mukono have launched investigations into the sudden and unexplained death of a local councillor who collapsed during a swearing-in ceremony before being pronounced dead at a nearby health facility.
The deceased, Henry Kitata, 30, a Parish Councillor for Katente Parish in Nakisunga Sub-county, Mukono District, reportedly died on Thursday after his health unexpectedly deteriorated while attending official proceedings at the Nakisunga Sub-county Headquarters.
According to preliminary findings, Kitata had been battling an illness for the past three days and was undergoing treatment.
Family members and close associates reportedly believed his condition had improved, prompting him to attend the swearing-in event.
However, witnesses say the councillor suddenly developed complications during the ceremony, causing alarm among attendees.
He was immediately rushed to Herona Medical Centre for emergency treatment, but medical personnel declared him dead upon arrival.
The sudden death has raised questions within the community, where Kitata was a well-known political figure.
Besides serving as the directly elected councillor for Katente Parish, he was actively contesting for the influential position of Speaker of Nakisunga Sub-county.
The Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, Racheal Kawala said detectives have since opened an inquiry to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
The body was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which police say will help determine the precise cause of death.
