Police in Kabale District are investigating the suspected suicide by hanging of a 20-year-old Senior Five student at Kigata High School.
The deceased, identified as Katusiime Babra, was found hanging inside the sitting room of her family home in Ahamurangara Village, Bugarama Parish, Buhara Sub-county, Kabale District, on Thursday evening, August 13, 2026.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 6pm after Katusiime’s mother returned home from cultivation.
Police said that at about 7am on the same day, Katusiime had told her mother that she would not be going to school because she had no examination to write. Her mother subsequently left her at home and went to cultivate.
When the mother returned at around 6pm, she reportedly found her daughter hanging on a rope inside the family’s sitting room.
Police in Kigezi said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime appealed to members of the public experiencing stress, depression, financial difficulties or family-related challenges to seek help rather than suffer in silence.
He encouraged people facing difficulties to talk to trusted family members, friends, religious leaders or local leaders and to seek counselling at the nearest health centre.
Police also appealed to the public to refrain from taking or sharing photographs and videos of the scene on social media, saying such acts disrespect the deceased and can further affect the bereaved family.
“Police appeals to members of the public, especially those undergoing stress, depression, financial problems or family issues, to seek help,” Tumushime said.
