Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two men following a stabbing incident that escalated into mob justice in Buyanja Sub-county.
The deceased have been identified as Karubakanga Emmanuel, 19, and Akandwanaho Justus, 25.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police, the incident occurred at Nyakasharara Cell, Rubanga South Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Karubakanga Emmanuel picked a quarrel with Akandwanaho Justus at a trading centre. During the altercation, Akandwanaho allegedly stabbed Karubakanga in the chest with a knife, killing him instantly.
Shortly after the stabbing, enraged residents reportedly took the law into their own hands and attacked Akandwanaho, lynching him on the spot.
Police have condemned the act of mob justice, urging members of the public to allow the justice system to handle criminal suspects.
“We condemn the act of taking the law into your own hands when there is a functioning justice system in place. Members of the public should always have trust in the justice system established by law,” SP Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson said.
