The statement released today 8 January 2025 by Isaac K. Ssemakadde, President, Uganda Law Society, reads that the Uganda Law Society (ULS) has taken note of the nine-month contempt imprisonment of Advocate Eron Kiiza yesterday by the General Court Martial at Makindye. While we respect the autonomy of our members. And do not typically provide running commentary on active cases in which they are involved, we acknowledge the significant public interest in this matter.
“In line with our commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring fair judicial processes, the ULS will conduct three separate fact-finding missions today. The first delegation will visit Advocate Kiiza at Kitalya Government Prison to establish the circumstances of his incarceration and discuss potential remedies. Concurrently, a second delegation will engage with the General Court Martial and hold consultations with Senior Counsel Martha Karua and Advocate Erias Lukwago.” The statement revealed
Additionally, a third delegation will meet with the Chief Justice of Uganda, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny- Dollo, to demand expeditious delivery of the Supreme Court’s judgment in Attorney General vs Michael Kabaziguruka, a case which bears direct relevance to the jurisdiction of military courts over civilians.
Following these consultations and a thorough review of all pertinent information, the ULS will issue a comprehensive statement addressing both the specific circumstances of this case and its broader implications for the administration of justice in Uganda.
“While we maintain our respect for ongoing legal processes, the Society remains steadfast in its duty to represent, protect and assist members of the legal profession in Uganda as regards conditions of practice and otherwise, as enshrined in Section 3(c) of the Uganda Law Society Act, Cap 305.” Said in the statement.
