KAMPALA,Namugongo: Bishop Jacinto Kibuuka, the Chairperson of the Christian Ecumenical Council of Uganda (CECU) has asked government security agencies to stop using guns and weapons to threaten citizens especially during elections period.

Bishop Kibuuka made the call during Uganda Martyrs Day prayers at Mamre International prayer centre, Janda-Namugongo.

He expressed his worry over continued violation of human rights by security agencies during political rallies, and  campaigns and even on the poling stations, noting that this is contrary to the Uganda’s consititution.

He said that where there is no truth, there is no peace. ” As CECU, we call for free, and fair elections so that our country may thrive in peace. The government must stop threatening citizens with guns and other weapons during elections, as well as the torture and suppression of civilians that deters them from making free choices. If we operate in truth, Uganda will flourish with freedom, peace, and development.”

Bishop Kibuuka alos used the same platform to appeal to opposition leaders and their supporters to avoid provoking security agencies. “All civilians stay calm, remain peaceful and refrain from inciting conflict. War only brings tears, injury, and death.”

Bishop Kibuuka further extended gratitude to the government and security agencies for ensuring peace and safety during the Martyrs Day celebrations.

Bishop Hannington Bahemuka, the Vice Chairperson of CECU who was the main celebrant, emphasized the spiritual and moral lessons of Martyrs Day, noting that Martyrs day honors those who stood firm in their faith and serves as a reminder to advocate for justice, freedom, and peace.

“Martyrs Day is an opportunity also to remind our government that if freedom is denied, people may be forced to shed blood. And that blood is unnecessary.”

He echoed the day’s theme, “The truth will make you free” (John 8:32), emphasizing that truth should triumph over all circumstances whether joyful or painful.
