Kampala, Uganda — The Africa Tourism and Environment Initiatives (ATEI), a dynamic youth-led nonprofit, will host the 3rd Annual Climate Change Awareness Marathon, Walkathon & Green Expo on Monday, September 22, 2025, at Makerere Freedom Square.

Under the theme “Mobility for a Green and Sustainable Future: Youth Innovation and Action for Climate Justice,” the event aims to spotlight climate-smart urban mobility, elevate youth-led innovations, and drive resource mobilization for climate action in rural Uganda.

Uganda’s Climate Crisis

Uganda is currently losing over 100,000 hectares of forest annually. The ripple effects are particularly harsh in vulnerable regions like Karamoja, where communities face worsening food insecurity, water shortages, and ecosystem degradation. Meanwhile, urban hubs like Kampala struggle with rising air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, largely due to inefficient, carbon-heavy transportation systems.

A Youth-Driven Solution

ATEI’s Climate Marathon and Green Expo will unite youth, communities, and key stakeholders to explore and promote sustainable, local climate solutions. Key highlights of the event include:

  • Marathon and Walkathon to raise awareness about clean, low-carbon mobility alternatives
  • A Green Expo featuring over 30 youth-led climate innovations and eco-friendly enterprises
  • Climate Dialogues involving at least 500 students and youth leaders

Proceeds will fund ecosystem restoration and sustainable tourism initiatives in the Kalimon Agro-Tourism Destination Community in Karamoja

“Uganda is at a critical climate crossroads… We need to promote local ownership and policy engagement on climate justice,” said Bismac Amumpaire Moses, Executive Director of ATEI. “This event is a bold step toward reimagining urban mobility, promoting clean transportation, and amplifying youth-led innovations.”

Be Part of the Change

ATEI’s Climate Change Awareness Marathon and Green Expo is more than just an event—it’s a movement. Mark your calendar for September 22 and join Uganda’s youth in building a greener, more resilient future
