Members of the Kawempe NRM District Elders League have launched their 2026–2031 Political Agenda Roadmap, which seeks to reawaken their party spirit of reconciliation and economic empowerment.
The launch was held at Makerere University Primary School in Kawempe Division under the theme: “Empowering elderly leaders with knowledge and skills to effectively engage government on critical issues pertaining to human rights, economic empowerment, and democracy, among others.”
The event coincided with the first-ever Division Elders League Executive Committee Members Training Workshop, organized by the Kampala District NRM Elders League Chairperson, John Tom Fisher Kasenge.
Kasenge told over 100 leaders drawn from all the 120 villages in the division that the government needs to build the capacity of elderly persons by improving their general welfare and health conditions, given the key roles they played while serving the government.
The political agenda outlines several key areas of focus, including enhancing communication and reporting skills for leaders, and improving preferential treatment for elderly persons in public spaces.
Other priorities include collecting data from each village to enable the government to plan better policies for this vulnerable community, as well as conducting timely home visits to check on the weak and those in poor health conditions.
Kasenge urged all eligible residents of the division to vote for all NRM party flag bearers, including the presidential candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for preserving and consolidating the gains achieved so far.
The Kawempe Division Councilor for Elders, Eng. Daniel Mayombwe Kigozi, said it was timely that the new political roadmap for elderly persons be given priority by the NRM administration, so that members’ welfare and health matters are effectively addressed.
In their resolutions, members collectively urged the President to ensure that issues affecting the elderly are placed high on the national agenda, noting that most of them served with him during the bush war and therefore deserve appreciation for their contribution to national development through concrete action addressing their pressing concerns.
