A quiet morning in Soroti City was shattered by gunfire when a brazen, early-morning ambush claimed the life of a local entrepreneur, exposing what authorities now describe as a coordinated criminal network operating across eastern Uganda.
At approximately 4:40am on April 3, 2026, Patricia Kokunda, a 36-year-old mobile money operator, was attacked near Goalman Supermarket along Station Road.
According to investigators, unidentified assailants forcibly dragged her from her vehicle before fatally shooting her and fleeing the scene with a handbag containing substantial cash and valuables.
What initially appeared to be a single act of violent robbery has rapidly unfolded into a far-reaching criminal investigation. A swift police response triggered a wave of intelligence-led operations spanning multiple districts, including Soroti, Amuria, Kalaki, and Abim, leading to a growing list of suspects believed to be linked to the killing.
According to the police spokesperson, Rusoke Kituuma, a total of 11 individuals are in custody, up from the initial four arrests, with investigators alleging a chilling level of coordination behind the attack.
Among those detained are individuals suspected of orchestrating the plot, executing the shooting, and supplying the weaponry used in the crime.
Police sources indicate that the suspects played distinct roles, from planning and initiation to direct involvement in the fatal ambush.
Crucial evidence has already been recovered, including a rifle believed to have been used in the shooting, ammunition, clothing worn during the operation, and a red motorcycle without registration plates thought to have aided the suspects’ escape.
Investigators also confirmed the recovery of the victim’s mobile phone, a Tecno Camon, alongside a portion of the stolen money.
Out of an estimated Shs28 million taken during the robbery, authorities say Sgs10.5 million has so far been recovered, raising hopes of further breakthroughs as the investigation deepens.
Kituumsa stated that operations are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects and dismantle what is increasingly believed to be an organized armed robbery ring.
The killing has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting growing concerns over violent crime targeting small business operators.
As the manhunt continues, law enforcement officials are urging members of the public to remain alert and cooperate with authorities by providing any information that could lead to further arrests, warning that those still at large may pose a continued threat.
