NTINDA, Kampala : The Christian community of St Luke’s Church of Uganda Ntinda has celebrated its elevation to Archdeaconry status, alongside the induction of Ven. Canon Capt. David Serunjoji as its inaugural Archdeacon.
The milestone was marked on 26 April 2026 during a special thanksgiving service held in Ntinda, presided over by the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, Rt. Rev. Frederick Jackson Baalwa.
In his remarks, Bishop Baalwa congratulated the congregation upon attaining the new status, which now mandates them to oversee seven churches within their jurisdiction. He noted that the Diocese of Kampala council granted the Archdeaconry status in recognition of the church’s vibrant and forward-looking development strategy, which positions it towards becoming economically self-sustaining.
Delivering his homily, Bishop Baalwa emphasized that the Church of Uganda is implementing a deliberate strategy to extend spiritual nourishment to communities facing numerous societal challenges.
“We have taken a deliberate decision to send out church teams across the country with a mission of offering spiritual guidance to citizens going through turbulent times, including election fatigue, disruptions in trade, and rising poverty levels,” he said.
He also called upon the government to strengthen systems of dialogue and engagement with citizens, describing such efforts as vital in promoting healing and social cohesion.
Bishop Emeritus Hannington Mutebi echoed the message of peace, urging calm during these challenging times. He underscored the church’s responsibility to spread hope and healing as a means of fostering peace in society.
In his brief remarks, Ven. Canon Capt. David Serunjoji expressed gratitude to the Diocese of Kampala for entrusting him with the role. He pledged to work closely with the Christian community to achieve their shared goals and objectives.
Meanwhile, the Head of Laity, Raymond Kyazze Simwogerere, announced the launch of a fundraising campaign aimed at raising UGX 10 billion for the construction of a mega commercial complex. He explained that the project, once completed, will generate income to support community outreach initiatives, including assisting the sick, vulnerable groups, and disadvantaged children, as well as extending essential social services.
“We call upon all stakeholders to support this initiative to build a modern commercial complex that will include offices, conference halls, shops, and other business infrastructure as a long-term investment for the church,” he said.
During the ceremony, Bishop Baalwa also handed over a brand-new Pajero vehicle (registration number UA 518EA) to the Archdeacon to facilitate his pastoral duties.
