More than 200 suspects have been arrested in a sweeping overnight security operation targeting crime-prone areas across Kampala Metropolitan, police have said.
The intelligence-led operation, conducted jointly by security agencies between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, covered several areas in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, and Makindye divisions that have recently been linked to rising cases of mugging, robbery, and drug abuse.
During the crackdown, security operatives recovered suspected opium, housebreaking tools, identity cards believed to belong to other individuals, and money transfer cards allegedly connected to criminal activity.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, the operation was mounted following persistent public complaints over criminal gangs terrorizing residents in different suburbs and trading centres.
All suspects remain in custody pending screening and prosecution as investigations continue.
Police said similar operations will continue across the Kampala Metropolitan area as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks and restore public safety.
