KAMPALA, UGANDA — On a brisk morning last weekend, Josephine Nansubuga pushed her trolley through the checkout lanes at Lugogo Mall, her mind occupied with the usual demands of Kampala’s daily hustle. As she finalized her shopping and prepared to leave, a Carrefour attendant stopped her with unexpected news: customers visiting during the store’s first hour of opening were being treated to complimentary breakfast.
For a moment, she was taken aback.
“I was pleasantly shocked,” Nansubuga recalls with a smile. “I thought I had misheard. You don’t often walk into a supermarket and get told there’s complimentary breakfast waiting for you. It was such a nice surprise and it immediately lifted my mood.”
Moments later, she was enjoying a warm cup of tea and a fresh pastry courtesy of Carrefour.
Now, more shoppers will have the opportunity to enjoy the same experience. From June 26 to June 28, customers who visit any Carrefour supermarket during the first hour after opening will receive complimentary breakfast treats, including hot coffee or tea and fresh snacks, while stocks last.
The activation will take place across all Carrefour locations in Uganda, including Oasis Mall, Lugogo Mall, Acacia Mall, Metroplex Shopping Mall in Naalya, Victoria Mall in Entebbe, Village Mall in Bugolobi and Arena Mall in Nsambya.
For a retail sector traditionally reliant on billboards and radio advertisements, the campaign reflects a growing shift toward experiential marketing. Rather than simply communicating value, retailers are increasingly focused on creating memorable moments that strengthen customer loyalty.
In Uganda’s increasingly competitive supermarket landscape, where retailers such as Chinatown Store, Fraine and Quality Supermarket continue to compete for consumer spending, the experience customers take away from a store can be just as important as the products they purchase.
Behavioral researchers often point to the “Peak End Rule”, the idea that people tend to remember experiences based largely on their most memorable moments and how they felt during them. By surprising shoppers with a complimentary breakfast at the start of their visit, Carrefour is creating a positive emotional connection that extends beyond the shopping basket.
For early morning shoppers across Kampala, Entebbe and beyond, the initiative offers more than just a chance to stock up on groceries. It is a simple gesture of appreciation: a warm drink, a fresh snack and an unexpected reminder that sometimes the smallest surprises leave the biggest impression.
