At least 14 people have been killed and 28 others injured following a devastating road traffic crash at Bobi Trading Centre along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, prompting renewed calls for stricter adherence to road safety regulations across Uganda.
According to the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, the crash occurred at about 9:34pm on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, involving an Isuzu bus, registration UBE 110H, operated by OPIT Travellers Company, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration KBS 564D/ZE 7948.
Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson Michael Kananura said preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver, who was allegedly travelling at high speed, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the highway, lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.
“Fourteen people have been confirmed dead while 28 others sustained injuries. The injured victims have been rushed to various medical facilities for treatment,” Kananura said, adding that investigations into the crash are underway.
The tragedy adds to growing concerns over road safety on Uganda’s major highways, particularly along busy transport corridors where speeding, reduced night-time visibility and pedestrian activity in trading centres continue to contribute to fatal crashes.
Kananura urged all motorists to observe speed limits, especially during night travel, remain vigilant, anticipate pedestrian movement in trading centres and always drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely in the event of unexpected hazards.
