The Archbishop of the Kampala Archdiocese, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, has commended the leadership of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Busega Catholic Parish for mobilising resources to support the implementation of key projects and programmes that contribute to the development of both the parish and the Archdiocese.
He made the remarks while presiding as the main celebrant during the parish’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, which coincided with a fundraising drive to raise UGX 600 million for major renovations to the church infrastructure.
The celebration was held under the theme: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Archbishop Ssemogerere congratulated the parish on reaching the milestone, noting its many achievements, including plans to construct a mega commercial complex that will serve as a revenue-generating project to support both parish and Archdiocese programmes.
He criticised some former students of Catholic Church-founded educational institutions for tarnishing the Church’s image by engaging in unethical practices such as corruption, land grabbing, adultery, and abuse of office, among other vices.
He cautioned that the Church expects all former students who passed through its educational institutions to uphold values that reflect their faith and avoid conduct that contradicts Christian teachings.
“Some reportedly squander public resources and later donate part of the money to our churches to support church activities, but we condemn such behaviour,” he said.
The chief guest, Owek. Pawulo Sembatya Mulundannume, congratulated the Christians on reaching the Golden Jubilee and urged them to continue serving God faithfully.
The Parish Priest, Fr. Richard Kakoma, expressed his appreciation to the faithful for supporting the fundraising campaign for the church’s renovation. He said the parish remains committed to working with all stakeholders in fulfilling its pastoral mission.
The celebrations were attended by several political leaders, including Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo, Rubaga Division Mayor Mberaze Mawiya, and Rubaga South MP Eugene Nassolo, among others.
The parish has six sub-parishes, including St. Balikuddembe Buloba, St. Bruno Kasenge, and St. Joseph Kyengera, among others.
It also has three schools: St. Joseph S.S. Busega, St. Carmel Primary School at the parish, and St. Donizio Natete.
