Bethany Hospital Calls for Wider Access to Fertility Care in Uganda

"Infertility should no longer be considered a condition that people should be ashamed to discuss"

KAMPALA — Bethany Women and Family Hospital has called for increased access to fertility care across Uganda, saying many people facing fertility challenges still struggle to access appropriate treatment. The call was made by Dr. Billy Patrick, the hospital’s Clinical Director, shortly after Bethany Women and Family Hospital, located in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, received a Platinum Award for Best Women’s Fertility Hospital in Uganda.

Dr. Patrick said the hospital plans to support the expansion of fertility services to different parts of the country over the next five years to bring treatment closer to people in need. He said infertility should no longer be considered a condition that people should be ashamed to discuss, noting that Uganda now has advanced fertility treatment options, including in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI) and laparoscopy.

Dr. Patrick encouraged couples and individuals experiencing fertility challenges to seek medical attention locally, saying they no longer necessarily need to travel abroad for treatment. He, however, acknowledged that fertility care can be costly and said Bethany offers discounts and installment payment arrangements to make treatment more affordable. He also called on the government to waive import duties on medical supplies and equipment used in fertility treatment, arguing that most of the equipment and materials are imported. He said reducing importation costs would help lower the overall cost of fertility services in Uganda.

Bethany Women and Family Hospital was recognised for its contribution to improving women’s fertility care and public health. The Platinum Award was presented by the Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. David Bahati, during the Business Excellence Awards 2026 dinner held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.

The event, organised by Consumer Publications Uganda Limited under the theme “Ceremony Excellence, Inspiring Innovation,” brought together businesses and other stakeholders to recognise excellence and innovation in Uganda’s private sector.

According to Dr. Patrick, the award is the seventh accolade Bethany Women and Family Hospital has received in recognition from consumers.

Speaking at the event, Minister Bahati reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for businesses to grow, compete and expand into regional and international markets.

He said the awards form part of the government’s broader efforts to promote quality, professionalism and competitiveness in the private sector, adding that recognising high-performing companies encourages others to adopt best practices that contribute to job creation and economic growth.

Bahati also urged businesses to embrace innovation and digital transformation to remain competitive in Uganda’s rapidly growing e-commerce market.
