St. Yakobo Mugongo Catholic Sub-Parish in Kyengera Parish is seeking Shs280 million to construct modern rental housing units as part of efforts to establish sustainable income-generating projects.

The sub-parish’s leader of the laity, Paul Magembe Walugembe, appealed to Christians, friends and well-wishers to support the strategic resource mobilisation drive to raise funds for the project, which he described as their flagship initiative.

Magembe made the remarks on Sunday, September 6, 2026, on the sidelines of a community medical camp organised by the sub-parish Catholic Men’s Guild.
The medical camp was supported by Kyengera Health Centre III, Mother of Mercy Hospital and Mengo Hospital Rotary Blood Bank, among other partners.

The camp was part of a series of planned community awareness activities organised by the Catholic Men’s Guild, which will climax on September 19 ahead of the sub-parish’s day celebrations on September 27, 2026.

Magembe said the Shs280 million target would finance the construction of furnished, modern rental housing units that would contribute to the sub-parish’s income generation and long-term financial sustainability.

He also revealed plans to support the establishment of a fully fledged vocational skills training workshop aimed at equipping young people with professional skills and qualifications to enable them to create employment opportunities for themselves.

Meanwhile, Kyengera Health Centre III data officer Layusa Namuwonge commended the Catholic Men’s Guild for organising the medical camp, saying it provided an opportunity for the health facility to directly engage with residents and offer essential medical services.

The services included HIV testing, screening for hypertension and diabetes, cancer screening, dental and gynaecological services, malaria testing and treatment, as well as blood donation.

Namuwonge urged the government to provide Kyengera Health Centre III with an ambulance, citing the facility’s growing number of patients and the need to transport expectant mothers and other critically ill patients requiring emergency referrals.

Her call followed concerns raised by patients attending the free medical camp over the absence of an ambulance at the busy health facility.

Jessica Namuwaya, an expectant mother, said the government should provide an ambulance because many residents cannot afford private health facilities due to financial constraints.

Namuwonge said the health centre receives more than 100 expectant mothers every month through its outpatient department, many of whom require maternity services and, in some cases, emergency referral.

At the blood donation drive, Mengo Rotary Blood Bank team leader Annet Namirembe said more than 50 units of blood had been collected.

She thanked the sub-parish leadership for providing an opportunity to conduct the blood donation exercise and urged residents to make regular blood donations to help save lives.

“Anyone can become a patient and need blood in the future,” Namirembe said, urging eligible residents to donate regularly.

The administrator of Mother of Mercy Hospital, Sister Maria Goretti Namuwulya, said the Catholic-founded, not-for-profit facility is committed to providing quality medical services at subsidised fees through a cost-sharing model that makes treatment more accessible to low-income urban residents.

She encouraged residents to utilise the facility, saying it has professionally trained medical staff capable of providing a range of essential clinical services.
