African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf arrived in New York with a senior AU delegation for the high-level week of the 81st U.N. General Assembly, the bloc said.
Youssouf is expected to press for greater African representation in global decision-making, including a stronger role for the continent at the U.N. Security Council and international financial institutions.
The AU has long called for reforms to global institutions, arguing that their structures do not reflect Africa’s growing political and economic weight.
Youssouf is also expected to focus on African-led approaches to peace and security, economic integration and development, as well as the continent’s role in addressing climate change, global health, trade and technology.
During his visit, he is expected to meet U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, world leaders and business representatives, while taking part in several high-level side events.
