KAMPALA , Monday — Uganda has officially begun its 2025-2026 General Elections Roadmap with the polling of Village Older Persons Committees, marking a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.
This dedicated election gives citizens aged 60 and above the opportunity to vote for representatives who will advocate for their interests at the village level. To be eligible, voters must appear on both the National Voters Register and the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Register for their village.
These committees serve an important function, ensuring that the voices, needs, and rights of older Ugandans are heard and represented in local governance. For many seniors, this election is more than a civic duty — it is a meaningful chance to participate in shaping the decisions that directly affect their lives.
Polling is underway across villages nationwide, with the Electoral Commission working closely with local authorities to ensure a smooth, secure, and accessible voting process. Security and transparency remain top priorities to guarantee that every eligible older citizen can vote freely and without hindrance.
This election stands as a powerful reminder that democracy must be inclusive. By empowering older persons to choose their leaders, Uganda honors their wisdom, experience, and continuing role in society.
As the first election under the current roadmap, today’s vote sets the stage for a broader national electoral season — one that aims to be fair, peaceful, and inclusive for all.
