KASSANDA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) — It began with a confrontation at a school in central Uganda. Within hours, a routine morning at Bright Way Secondary School had turned into a homicide investigation after a stone thrown during the dispute struck a student on the head, leaving him dead.
Ronald Ssemiyingo, 20, a Senior Three student, was seriously injured on October 5 at the school in Kyamasansa village, Kassanda sub-county, according to police.
Police said the confrontation involved Resty Namutebi, a canteen attendant at the school.
During the incident, Namutebi allegedly picked up a stone and threw it towards the student she was confronting.
The stone missed its intended target but struck Ssemiyingo on the head, police said.
The injured student was given first aid at the school before being taken to Red Rose Hospital for further treatment.
But he died after arriving at the hospital, turning what police described as a confrontation into a fatal incident.
Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, said investigators had begun establishing exactly what happened before the stone was thrown and the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
“The scene of crime has been visited by a homicide team from Kassanda district, and statements from witnesses have been recorded,” Kigozi said.
Namutebi was arrested as police continue their investigation.
Authorities said further inquiries would seek to establish the full circumstances of the incident, including the precise cause of Ssemiyingo’s death.
The case has raised fresh questions about how a confrontation within a school environment can escalate so quickly, with police yet to establish the complete sequence of events that preceded the fatal blow.
For now, the investigation remains open, and the circumstances surrounding the student’s death will be determined as police gather evidence and question those who witnessed the incident.
