KAMPALA, Uganda – Equity Bank Uganda is reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability through its innovative Equi-Green loan product, aimed at increasing access to clean, affordable energy solutions across the country.
As Uganda grapples with the growing impacts of climate change, the bank is taking a leadership role in promoting green financing as a key tool for climate action and economic development.
The Equi-Green product provides tailored financing for households, small businesses, and communities to acquire energy-saving technologies such as clean cookstoves, solar lighting systems, and water and sanitation (WASH) solutions. These alternatives reduce reliance on traditional energy sources like charcoal and kerosene, promoting healthier living, cutting energy costs, and protecting the environment.
So far, Equity Bank has disbursed UGX 22.24 billion in green loans to fund climate-resilient projects focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation. These loans empower individuals, enterprises, and organizations to implement sustainable initiatives that support Uganda’s broader environmental and climate mitigation goals.
In 2024 alone, the bank planted over 30,000 trees to combat deforestation, curb carbon emissions, and address soil erosion. It also partnered with 18 clean energy implementation organizations to ensure clients not only access financing but also benefit from quality products and technical expertise.
Equity Bank has already facilitated the sale of more than 51,000 clean energy products—including solar lights and improved cookstoves—providing affordable, eco-friendly energy solutions to underserved populations, particularly in rural areas.
In a strategic collaboration with the Uganda Energy Credit Capitalization Company (UECCC), the bank secured UGX 5 billion in additional green finance funding. This partnership aims to expand the reach of clean energy financing and accelerate the adoption of renewable technologies nationwide.
All these efforts are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on climate action, clean energy, and sustainable communities.
