KAMPALA, Uganda: The family of detained opposition leader Kizza Besigye has organised a special Holy Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral Rubaga in Kampala.
Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, announced that the prayers will be held today at 2:00pm and has invited members of the public to attend.
“I invite Ugandans to come and join me and my family at a Holy Mass to be celebrated by His Grace Paul Ssemogerere at Rubaga Cathedral at 2:00pm today,” Byanyima said.
She explained that the purpose of the Mass is to commit Dr Besigye to God in prayer for his health and freedom, while also praying for other prisoners and people who are ill across the country.
Byanyima emphasized that the invitation is open to all, regardless of faith or political affiliation.
“We are inviting everyone, whatever your faith — whether you are Catholic, Anglican, Muslim, or a traditional spiritualist — to come and join us in prayer for our people and our country. Whether you belong to the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), National Unity Platform, Democratic Party, or even the National Resistance Movement — all are welcome,” she said.
She added that anyone concerned about human rights and the welfare of prisoners should stand in solidarity and attend the prayers.
Background to the Case
Besigye, together with Obedi Lutale and Capt. Denis Oola, was allegedly abducted in Nairobi in 2024 after attending a book launch hosted by Kenyan politician Martha Karua.
According to prosecutors, the trio later travelled to Switzerland, Greece, and Kenya, where they reportedly attended both physical and virtual meetings allegedly aimed at plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government. The alleged activities are said to have involved operatives based in Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala.
They are further accused of failing to report knowledge of the alleged treasonous activities between 2023 and November 2024, contrary to Ugandan law.
