RUKUNGIRI — Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal road crash that occurred on Thursday evening at about 7:00 p.m. in Murambo Cell, Nyabukuku, Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
The crash involved motor vehicle registration number UBK 931A and an unidentified red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle carrying a boda boda rider and a passenger.
According to police, the motor vehicle was travelling from Rwenziri Catholic Parish in Bugangari Sub-county towards Nyakibale Catholic Parish in Rukungiri Municipality, where the occupants were reportedly heading to attend a youth conference.
It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the motorcycle before the vehicle overturned.
Four people lost their lives in the crash, with three dying at the scene and another passing away later in the emergency room at Nyakibale Hospital.
SP Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson said that the deceased have been identified as Praise, 16; Viani, 15; Nahurira Bridget, 14; and Tito Muhereza, 20.
Several other people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The injured include Tumusiime Godfrey, 16; Monica Akampulira, 18; Kansiime Scovia, 18; Nanshaba Viani, 16; Turyagumanawe Benjamin, 18; and Nayebare Proscovia, 17.
Police investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
