Police in Kigezi Region have heightened security measures ahead of the reopening of schools for the third term on Monday, September 14, 2026, warning parents, school administrators and road users to take precautions to protect learners.

The police say the beginning of a new school term is usually accompanied by increased movement of people, traffic congestion and a heightened risk of road crashes, theft and other crimes.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime urged parents and guardians to accompany children below the age of 12 to school and carefully check their luggage before they leave home.

Parents have also been advised not to allow children to carry drugs, alcohol or other dangerous items to school.

Police further urged parents to inform school administrators about any health conditions affecting their children and to establish the identity of drivers or boda boda riders transporting their children, including taking note of the vehicle or motorcycle registration number.

School administrators have also been directed to strengthen security as learners return.

According to police, schools should thoroughly check learners’ luggage, maintain records of all visitors and motor vehicles entering school premises and examine children for possible signs of abuse that may have occurred during the holiday.

School authorities have also been advised to tighten security at gates, dormitories and fences while checking for safety hazards such as open manholes, faulty electrical wiring and dilapidated latrines.

Police have encouraged schools to install and maintain fire-fighting equipment and CCTV cameras to enhance the safety of learners and staff.

The transport sector has also been urged to exercise caution during the school opening period. Drivers of school and private vehicles have been warned against speeding, overloading and drunk driving.

Police further called on vehicle owners and school authorities to ensure that all vehicles transporting learners are in good mechanical condition.

Transport operators have also been asked to report any crime committed against learners while on board their vehicles to the nearest police station.

“We call upon all road users and the public to cooperate with Police to have a safe third-term opening,” Tumushime said.

Police urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure that learners return to school safely and that the third term begins without incidents.
