Police in Kassanda District have launched a murder investigation after a 33-year-old man was found dead in a pit latrine following a bitter dispute reportedly linked to family land.
The deceased, identified as Godfrey  Mwesige, was discovered on August 28, 2026, at Kitagonerwa LC1 in Bweyongedde Parish, Kalwana Subcounty.
According to police, Mwesige’s mother, Faith Nakazibwe, reported the matter at Kikandwa Police Station at about 10:50am after finding her son’s body in the pit latrine.
Police said the deceased and his mother had, the previous day, gone to the Kitagonerwa LC1 chairperson, Sebatta Kizito, to report alleged threats of violence against them.
The threats reportedly followed an attempt by Badru Mukuye Dafiki and Turyagyenda to stand surety for Kasaawe, the deceased’s brother, who was in custody at Kassanda over allegations of threatening violence against his mother and brother.
Police said Nakazibwe opposed the bail application, resulting in a bitter exchange of words and alleged threats involving the parties.
Investigators said the dispute was rooted in a family land wrangle, with Kasaawe reportedly seeking to obtain his share of the family land and sell it to Mukuye, a move that was opposed by his mother and the deceased.
After receiving the murder report, officers from Kikandwa Police Station, supported by the Kassanda homicide team, visited the scene and documented evidence.
Witness statements were also recorded as investigators began piecing together the circumstances surrounding Mwesige’s death.
Police said the condition of the body raised suspicion that he had been strangled.
“The body’s head was turning 360 degrees, which gave a clear impression that the deceased may have been strangled by neck twisting,” said Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region Police spokesperson.
The body was taken to Kassanda Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police said the suspects remain at large and that investigations are ongoing.
Kigozi urged members of the public to resolve land disputes through lawful channels rather than resorting to threats or violence.
“We appeal to people to always seek for legal means to handle land disputes,” Kigozi said, adding that police in Kassanda, reinforced by the Wamala Region team, would pursue the suspects and bring them to justice.
