GOLF: Peter Mayende’s steady nerves and relentless practice paid off as the Lugazi teenager clinched the overall title at NCBA Junior Golf Series finale, held yesterday at Uganda Golf Club. The 16-year-old finished the final round in 75 strokes, demonstrating skill, composure, and consistency against a strong field of young golfers from across the country. The victory caps a season that saw Mayende gain regional exposure and learn valuable lessons during the Victoria Cup in Entebbe.
“When I teed off on the first hole, I felt I could win. I just told myself to stay calm, believe in myself, and commit to every shot,” Mayende said. He credited the structured junior circuit, particularly the U.S. Kids Golf tournaments, for building his confidence and improving his overall game. The teenager, who turns 17 later this year, also pledged to guide younger players entering the sport, offering advice on discipline, focus, and integrity.
Sunday’s finale also highlighted outstanding performances across all age groups. In the Girls 15–18 category, Rachael Natukunda won with 85 strokes, closely followed by teammate Esezar Kemigisa with 88. Joanita Nanyombi finished third on 91 strokes, while Kololo’s Valerie Karemera returned 103. In the Boys 10 division, Dante Kawalya led with 40 strokes, ahead of Klaus Murangira who returned 51 and Entebbe’s Arthur Hajumukiza with65 strokes. In the Girls 11–12 class, Hannah Matsiko of Kampala carded 80 strokes to take the top spot, with Camilla Murungi finishing second on 125.
Coach Les Brown said the results show the growth of junior golf in Uganda. “More than 20 new players under 10 joined the series this season. Several juniors have lowered their scores after consistent coaching and competitive exposure. Sponsor-backed opportunities from NCBA Bank have also allowed talented young golfers to compete internationally, giving them critical experience and raising the standard locally,” he said.
Mark Muyobo, NCBA Bank CEO, praised the series as a vital platform for nurturing Uganda’s next generation of golfers. “The NCBA Junior Golf Series has grown into a structured pathway that allows young players to develop talent, build discipline, and strengthen leadership skills. We remain committed to supporting junior golfers through both local and international tournaments,” he said. Muyobo highlighted the importance of parental support and coaching in shaping future champions.
Mayende’s triumph, alongside the day’s category winners, shows that with structured support, disciplined practice, and competitive opportunities, Uganda’s junior golfers are steadily building the skill, resilience, and character to compete at national and regional levels. The NCBA Junior Golf Series now heads into the off-season with a deeper roster of contenders and heightened expectations for the next season.
