Police in Ntunda Town Council have launched investigations after an irate mob overpowered officers and lynched a suspect in custody who had allegedly confessed to a double murder.
According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the victim of the mob attack, identified as Amon Senkula, had been arrested earlier this week in connection with the brutal killing of Awali Sentongo and his wife, Doreen Ayebare. The couple was reportedly murdered on February 14, 2026.
Police said the suspect had confessed to the killings and agreed to lead detectives to the location where he had allegedly hidden the weapon used in the crime.
At approximately 3:00pm on Tuesday (February 17, 2026), the District Police Commander (DPC) of Kyankwanzi, accompanied by detectives and armed guards, escorted the suspect to a forested area in Bakulimya Village, Ndairinga Ward, Ntunda Sub-county, to recover the exhibit weapon.
Before the weapon could be retrieved, a large and violent mob from Ntunda Town and surrounding areas reportedly descended on the scene.
Armed with pangas, sticks, clubs, stones, bricks, and spears, the group overwhelmed the police team and fatally attacked the suspect.
Kigozi said despite efforts by officers to contain the situation, the mob killed the suspect on the spot and fled immediately afterward.
Police have described the incident as “regrettable,” emphasizing that the suspect was meant to face prosecution through the judicial process.
“Our intention was to ensure that Senkula was prosecuted in accordance with the law for the alleged crimes,” Kigozi said in a statement. “We strongly condemn this act of mob justice and have launched investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible.”
He stressed that authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the mob action and working to track down the perpetrators.
