NSAMBYA-KAMPALA: Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, has sent a warm congratulatory message to Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala on the occasion of his 99th birthday, praising his lifelong dedication and service to the Church.
The message, delivered through the Vatican Apostolic Nunciature in Kampala, was read on 27 December 2025 during a thanksgiving Mass held at the Nsambya Pastoral Residence. The Mass was presided over by the Head of the Nsambya Pastoral Residence, Rev. Fr. Moses Musoka.
Cardinal Wamala marked his 99 years with a celebration hosted for his grandchildren at the Nsambya Pastoral Residence headquarters in Kampala. The colourful event attracted over 80 close family members and grandchildren, led by the State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. J.C. Muyingo. Several clergy members, nurses, clan leaders, and other invited guests also attended.
In his message, Pope Leo XIV commended Cardinal Wamala for serving the Church with great energy, commitment, and dedication, noting that his contribution is deeply appreciated by the universal Church. The Pope wished him good health, God’s blessings, and many more years of life.
The Pope further congratulated the Catholic community in Uganda for nurturing a leader of Cardinal Wamala’s stature, emphasizing that his pastoral service and leadership have been felt and appreciated both locally and internationally.
Fr. Musoka revealed that Cardinal Wamala turned 99 years on 26 December, having served as a priest for 68 years, a bishop for 44 years, and a cardinal for 31 years.
In a message he personally read, Cardinal Wamala thanked all those who stood with him throughout his pastoral ministry.
He encouraged them to continue living in love and unity and asked for prayers as he goes through a period of reported weak health.
Speaking as chairperson of Cardinal Wamala’s grandchildren, Minister Muyingo commended the Catholic Church for its strong and cordial relationship with the Cardinal. He expressed the family’s gratitude to all individuals and institutions that worked with Cardinal Wamala during his years of active service.
