BREAKING NEWS: MTN Mobile Money Uganda has appointed Sarah Bateta Okwi as its Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 March 2026, following the decision by Richard Yego to step down from the role.
Okwi’s appointment comes at a pivotal time as MTN Mobile Money continues its transition into a fully independent fintech entity, separate from MTN Uganda’s core telecommunications operations. She currently serves as Chief Finance Officer and will lead the company in an acting capacity as the Board commences the process of appointing a substantive CEO.
Richard Yego will formally exit the position at the end of February 2026, concluding a four-year tenure marked by significant growth and transformation of the mobile money business. During his leadership, MTN Mobile Money Uganda expanded its product portfolio, advanced digital financial inclusion, strengthened regulatory alignment, and consolidated its position as one of Uganda’s leading digital financial services providers.
The Board expressed its appreciation to Yego for his leadership and contribution to the growth and success of MTN Mobile Money Uganda.
Okwi brings nearly two decades of experience within the MTN Group, having held several senior leadership roles across the organization. As Chief Finance Officer, she has played a key role in strengthening financial governance, enhancing regulatory compliance, and building operational resilience within MTN Mobile Money Uganda.
The Board has assured customers, partners, and stakeholders that the business remains fully operational and stable, with services continuing as usual during the leadership transition.
