EDUCATION: The government has been challenged to support school Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) talent identification programmes in order to empower learners to utilise the profession as a future source of income.
The call was made over the weekend by the Headmaster of Namilyango College, Constantine Sajabbi Mpuuga, during the college’s 2nd Annual Inter-House Music, Dance and Drama competitions held at the school.
Mpuuga observed that the government should make a deliberate effort to encourage schools to budget for this crucial activity, noting that it is part of the new Lower Secondary Competence-Based Curriculum, which empowers learners with self-esteem and skills such as teamwork, creativity, discipline and leadership, while also promoting cultural diversity.
He thanked the parents for supporting and encouraging their sons to participate in MDD activities, which have increasingly become an income-generating profession. He added that the boys are on the right track towards future prosperity.
“We sincerely thank the parents who turned up for the event and made a humble gate contribution towards the cost of the event. This effort cannot be undermined,” he noted, adding that their presence adds value and confidence among the boys, who become energized while on stage.
McKee House emerged overall champions after collecting 523 points, walking away with a bull as their prize. They were followed by Mukasa House with 520 points, which received three goats, while Kiwanuka House came third with 489 points out of a total of 12 houses.
Parents also appreciated the great work being done by the college headmaster, Mpuuga, particularly in advancing the college’s development agenda in the right direction.
They further commended the teamwork among staff, which enabled the college to register a strong UCE performance by their boys.
