EDUCATION: Seeta University has called upon outgoing Senior Six students across the country to enrol in its ongoing free eight-week Artificial Intelligence (AI) short course, aimed at equipping young people with practical digital skills.
The appeal was made during the university’s successful S6 Vacation Fest 2026, an event designed to bring together Senior Six leavers during their holiday as the institution prepares for its next academic intake.
Speaking on the sidelines of the colourful event, the University Academic Registrar, Mr. Ronald Mbago, accompanied by the Students’ Guild Prime Minister, Mumbere Kenneth, said the institution values youth empowerment and had therefore taken a bold step to offer free AI training.
According to Mr. Mbago, the training focuses on building computer competencies in Artificial Intelligence, including designing robotic programs and developing applications that can later translate into income-generating projects and job creation.
“The University has so far registered 500 students from across the country and beyond who are undertaking the eight-week free AI course. We encourage more Senior Six leavers to seize this opportunity,” Mbago said.
He urged interested students to enrol at the university’s Mbalala campus along the Kampala–Jinja Highway, noting that five weeks remain before the current cohort graduates and receives certificates recognising them as emerging AI innovators.
Students’ Guild Prime Minister Mumbere Kenneth commended the university leadership for extending the opportunity to more than 2,000 Senior Six finalists who attended the fest from different regions and neighbouring countries.
“We appreciate the University leadership, particularly the Academic Registrar, for creating this platform that allows students to interact, build networks and understand what the University has to offer,” Mumbere said.
He added that the engagement enables students to make informed decisions about their future academic paths and described the initiative as strategic and forward-looking.
Mumbere also revealed his intention to contest for the position of Secretary General of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA), pledging to champion student-led policies that promote inclusivity, especially improved infrastructure for students with disabilities.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the initiative. Nakibuule Robinnah, an outgoing Senior Six student from St. Peter’s Secondary School Namawojolo in Mukono District, and Kagenyi Ibrahim from Kilifi High Vision School in Mombasa, Kenya, said the programme had provided a rare opportunity to gain practical AI skills and connect with peers from diverse backgrounds.
They noted that bringing together students from different schools and countries for advanced digital training positions Seeta University as a competitive institution within the East African region.
The students, however, appealed to government to invest more resources in AI programmes within private universities, including training specialised lecturers and equipping institutions with adequate computer laboratories and related infrastructure. They argued that such support would enable more students, especially those from rural and vulnerable communities, to benefit from emerging technologies.
